Republicans Fumbled Their Right To Govern, Meanwhile Obama Recognized the 'Tide of Discontent'

Dear Dean,

When you last wrote to me your salutation was "Dear Gilbert". Now it's "Dear Mr Skopp". I'm sorry if we somehow lost a little intimacy with each other. I hope I have been civil to you in my correspondence and that I may continue to address you as Dean.

I agree whole heartily with your observation that the future will confirm the past:

"...If I and other McCain voters are the fools so many family members believe, then time and President Obama will prove us wrong and we will be deserving of a badge of shame."...Rotbart

However, I do not believe that you are a fool for supporting McCain if your reasons are compelling and I do not think that you are deserving of a "badge of shame" should you be wrong in your predictions.

After 8 years of prosperity under President Clinton, we have, in the following 8 years, become bogged down in two wars; we are in a recession brought about by the policies of our lying, incompetent, Republican Administration and supported by a Republican-Controlled Congress; our Constitution has been weakened by the loss of Habeus Corpus, unchecked government spying and torture. For these reason alone the Republicans should not be returned to power. However, John McCain supported all of these Bush Policies, and ran one of the worst campaigns ever, showing that he is largely now inept.

My concern is that we in the USA protect the freedoms given to us by our Constitution, that we remain militarily strong and moral in our foreign policies. I believe in diplomacy before war and I'm not naive to believe that  Hitler should or could have been appeased. I do not believe that Ahmadinjhad is a Hitler. I do not even believe that he has significant power in Iran. I think he is a puppet of the Imams and it's the Imams that we should be concerned about. And yes, I believe Iran is trying to build an Atomic weapon and I think that the present government should not be allowed to do that. I think the western powers should take the lead to show Iran that it would not be in their interests to develop an Atomic weapon.  Of course it's easier said then done, but better than the "Bring it on" stupidity of our outgoing president and his desire to take on the world alone.

I believe a strong USA is important for Israel, but in the end, Israel must depend on itself.

So, Obama was smart enough to recognize the rising tide of discontent in the USA and used that to champion change and ride that wave to victory. If you recall McCain, in 2000, rode a similar "wave" with his "Straight Talk Express", but in South Carolina Bush's campaign consultants used Robo- Calls to imply that McCain had a natural born black child (actually the child was adopted). Bush won, McCain lost. In 2008 McCain hired the same Bush Campaign Consultants to run his campaign and with that, his desire to win overcame his integrity and the campaign showed it. To me, McCain could no longer be trusted.

Obama, as it turned out, impressed me with his oratory, his ability to answer questions with grammatically correct sentences which made sense to me. He is probably one of the brightest men to be elected President and his selections to date in forming his cabinet have been widely applauded by almost all.

So we shall see how it turns out and I'm sure that we are both wishing him success!

Gilbert

    Dear Mr. Skopp,

Waht is your definition of moral? That maybe a key difference between the extremists (rabid leftists) in this country and the moral majority.

For the last 2 years, the Democrats have been in charge in both Houses of Congress. They too have the portion of lying political action. Just wait until the leaders of the Democratic Party opens their mouth, out comes viscous lies and innuendos.

Sir, I live in South Carolina and your statement about Mr. McCain having a "black child" is a first for me. Also, South Carolinians are not as stupid, backwoods, racists and whatever as some people like Jesse Jackson and many other members of the Democratic Party Hierarchy.

Sir, if you are impressed by someones oratory skills and you voted on that alone, do you know what Perjury entails? I have been trained to know when someone is lying or not. While you may be of good character and truly believe what you state, Obama is one of the worst liars there has ever been. And he did it in the face of ALL America.
For the record, I do respect Mr. McCain as a fellow veteran, however, I did not vote for Mr. McCain because I particularly liked him as a candidate. No other candidate was better that was running for office of President. I would have much preferred Gov. Palin due to having much more experience and she was the most trustworthy candidate on the ballot.

Congratulations for someone being chosen does not quite connect with being qualified and the right person for the job. Most of them are extremists with an extremist world view. They scare me more that all the Ayatollahs combined due to their position of power.

    Shalom,
    Yacov

      Dear Yacov,

I believe "Moral" is a relative term associated with the society or culture in which you live. What may be moral today was not necessarily moral "yesterday". Yours and my lifetimes are relatively short compared to Homosapien's Lifetime record and so we are not necessarily aware of the changes in morality. Besides, morality has nothing to do with the positions of the "moral majority" (minority?) and leftist extremists. It's just politics and rationalization for what ever they believe.

Your point about Democrats being in charge the past two years is wrong! Democratic seats plus 2 Independents in the Senate number 51 votes, which appear to be a majority. However, the Senate has a rule that 60 votes are necessary to pass a bill in which the opposition threatens a filibuster (67 votes are necessary to stop a filibuster). The Democrats would need 9 Republicans to vote with them to pass legislation in which Senator Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority leader threatens a filibuster. He has made that threat over 100 times in the past two years and has kept his Republican colleagues from straying from the party line so that the Democrats have never accrued more than 58 votes. So it's the minority Republicans who have been controlling the passage of laws in the past 2 years in Congress. That's why the Democrats have been talking about the need to win 60 seats. With the Republican Senate victory in GA, the Democrats can not win 60 seats this year.

I guess it's well known outside of South Carolina and your circle of acquaintences about the Robo-calls about McCain. They usually consisted of someone "taking a survey". One of the questions would be... would your impression of Senator McCain be influenced if you found out he had fathered a black child? Of course they never said he fathered a black child....

If you read my letter carefully, I never said that it was Obama's oratory skills alone that made me vote for him even though that was refreshing to hear in a politician, particularly after 8 years of listening to Bush's embarrasing faux pas.

I agree with you that our vote for President should be made on the basis of qualifications. It's just that what you believe to be experience and wisdom in a politician is different from mine. I do not believe that seeing Russia from your living room qualifies you as a foreign policy expert on Russia. I believe that opposition to the war in Iraq was a sign of wisdom. We should have finished up in Afghanistan and captured Osama Bin Laden before invading Iraq, a country that did nothing to us, and had nothing to do with 9/11.

      Shalom,
      Gilbert
